With a humble upbringing and a slew of achievements under her belt, Karen Civil’s philanthropic efforts in Haiti couldn’t have come at a better time. Needless to say, Karen Civil’s behind the scenes accomplishments can be attributed to the success of numerous artists and entertainers since the early 2000’s, and she has continued to be a driving force of triumphant digital campaigns that we see daily on television, online and in social media. The LiveCivil playground which consists of recyclable material such as reclaimed tires and bamboo, aims to not only provide a safe and fun space for Haitian children to learn, but also helps the Haitian economy by using excess materials and providing work opportunities for Haitian residents to build and maintain the playground.Īside from the $41,000 funding donated personally by Karen Civil, financial support has been garnered from the likes of current hip hop entertainers such as Nipsey Hussle, president of Young Money Records Mack Maine, renowned DJ Funkmaster Flex, Haitian-American professional boxer Andre Berto, President of Urban Music at Interscope Records Joie Manda, official DJ of the Cleveland Cavaliers DJ Steph Floss and many more. All these kids have are dirt areas and random materials to climb on and build with, and that thought alone is what drove me to begin building the playground.” Growing up in America, even in the rougher parts of Elizabeth, I had two nice playgrounds to choose from as a child. “Some of these kids walk an hour to school and come home to an empty house. Civil and her team also rebuilt the school where the playground is located, adding a new roof, flooring, pipping to for working restrooms and a new paint job to use bright colors to inspire creativity. The Live Civil Playground includes a soccer field, basketball court, swings, outdoor cafeteria and learning games for the 300 kids who attend the school. Juggling roles as diverse as a consultant, social media manager, publicist, blogger and A&R to the list of artists she’s worked with this far, Civil’s latest venture, building of her LiveCivil Playground in Haiti, has introduced the public to her more personable and charitable side. Her career continued to flourish and vary as the ever changing digital world does, and in the process, she received an MTV MVP hip-hop award and launched her own media outlet,. “I taught them how to build a profitable e-commerce business as well as wrangled New Era to make a run of Dipset hats and merchandise which flew off the shelves.” She’s worked with a list of notable artists and rappers, including Lil Wayne and Young Money, YG, The Clipse, Nipsey Hustle, and Cam’ron, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana of the Diplomats. By the time I left, they had almost 6.5 million. One month, we saw Facebook followers jump by 1 million when Lil Wayne wore his Beats headphones to the Grammy's and listened to his album the whole time.” When I was brought on, Beats by Dre was at 300,000 Facebook followers. They said they liked the way I branded myself online and wanted me to help them with their digital marketing and finding their online voice. Civil advanced from intern, to a show assistant, to eventually moving on from the station to create and develop multimillion-dollar ad campaigns and handle a significant part of digital direction for companies including Beats By Dre, as she was appointed as their digital marketing manager in 2011. Civil started her career in 2002 as a “super intern” with DJ Funk Master Flex at one of the most widely known radio station in New York City, WQHT 97.1 FM- better known as Hot 97. Often said to be “the next Oprah” by colleagues and urban media outlets, she continues to follow in like footsteps from creating and running her own media outlet to national public speaking campaigns.
